OSHA Section 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M, 1926.502 for fall protection systems states that guardrail systems shall have a top edge height of 42 in. plus or minus 3 in. above a walking and/or working level. Mid-rails, intermediate vertical or equivalent structural members (no more than 19 in. apart), screens, etc. shall be installed between the top edge of the guardrail system and the walking and/or working level at least 21 in. high when there is no parapet wall. Also, OSHA states that guardrail systems shall be capable of withstanding a force of at least 200 pounds applied within 2 in. of the rail at any point along the top edge.
